Freewheeling in the Pines

At first blush, building mountain-bike trails in the Pinelands seems silly. Mountain bikers crave the stomach-churning ups and downs of tracks carved from the hills. South Jersey is tediously flat.

But it has something that other areas don’t have: extra dirt.

Copious amounts of protected dirt - already formed into miles and miles of old trails, rough fire cuts, and unmarked sand roads - mean a bonanza for mountain bikers who feel increasingly hemmed in by concrete.

This is a cool article about people who are worried about keeping mountain bikers coming back. Trail work is a must for them and designing new trails to keep the interest high is thier focus right now.

Yeah…this area is extremely flat. There is definitely a whole lot of nothing in the pine barren section of NJ. My wife and I both grew up in Jersey before moving to VA (she in the Philly area, me in the NY area). We still ride through this area to get to the Jersey Shore. There is a lot of dirt motorcycle riding and atv’ing in this area. It seems that the dirt is moved around to make small hills and whoop-de-doos to make it slightly interesting. I did some mtb’ing in the area when I was in college and I can tell you that the dirt is really sand. Very ashy and lots of slipping and sliding through thicker sections. Watch out for ticks too! Nonetheless, jersey needs some new mountain biking places…it’s not a good scene up there at all.
