Xtracycle: The “Sport Utility Bike”

October 6th, 2005 by Carl

All I’m gonna say is WOW. I wonder how far the guy had to ride with the cabinet?

Check out more pics at the Xtracycle website.

I wonder if they have singlespeed versions?

I have an Xtracycle and it changed my lifestyle. it’s amazing. yes you can set one up for singlespeed if you really wanted, but it might be a hassle to get good tension. however you ould want multiple speeds because yoiu might be haulling a 400 pound load at some point.

It’s amazing what you can do with human powered machines. Look at how they haul all sorts of cargo with bicycles, and trikes in the Far East!

That cabinent picture reminded me of Team Bad Boy. They used to come on RAGBRAI, (the annual bachanalia of bikes across Iowa) and each member would have a full sized appliance mounted on their bike. One guy had a fully functional barbecue, another had a FULL sized stereo, with generator. The best one was the guy with a fully functional cabinent that folded out to become a bar, all stocked with wine, hard liquor, and beer! Needless to say, this team was quite popular!

    Found this via BikePortland.org:

They used an Xtracycle, amoung others, to move. Pretty cool.

I built my Xtracycle using my faithful 1×1. It almost made me cry, but I built it up as a 1×7 using a handful of zip ties and a lever-to-derailleur run of cable housing.

    Runs like a dream.

I own one too. Wouldn’t do it up singlespeed myself. Kinda defeats the cargo carrying point.

Have to say that it exceeded my expectations. The thing really does all that the web site claims. One thing that they don’t mention is how springy it is. The first time I bunny-hopped it I got an extra 2 inchs.

They don’t mention all the attention it gets too. Getting really tired of explaining that I didn’t build it. Mind you I have the only one in a town 900,000 or so.
