We are riding the Mystery Mountain chairlift toward the spine of the Sawtooth Mountains. The real riding will begin there, when we pluck the mountain bikes from the chairlift and pedal into the maple forest.

Mountain biking beneath a canopy of color is reason enough to explore the Sawtooths in September. Beyond that, the experience is infused with the sheer adventure of the riding. The cool September morning whizzes past bare cheeks and legs. You’re sucking lungfuls of air so pure you could sell it in L.A. Your quadriceps beg for mercy on some of the climbs, and you’re not quite sure you can keep your steed beneath you on the rocky descents.
