Ridin’ with SRAM X.0
October 4th, 2005 by MikeCarl and I rode at Peaks View park this afternoon for a while after work. It was my first ride in a couple of weeks because of work and such so we limited it to 45 minutes. This was also my first ride on the Gary Fisher X-Calibur since Troy outfitted it with our new SRAM X.O grip shifters and derailleurs (thanks again Troy).
Like most of bikers I’m more comfortable with trigger shifters and actually have had no experience with grip shifters until today. I can say that I couldn’t have picked a better set of grip shifters to start out with. The hardest thing about the change at first is remembering which way to twist the shifter for higher or lower gears. But the response is so good that if I twisted it the wrong way and then immediately twisted back it kept right up with me. My hand placement is a little weird also. I feel like I’m holding on to the center of the bar instead of the outside like normal. I got over that pretty quick and was able to enjoy the benefits of X.O technology. I’m very impressed.

Also, it’s a bit lighter than triggers, and less moving parts to boot. Very reliable!
on my Rocky Mountain Blizzard I had a set up that was trigger shifter for the rear and grip shift for the front
on longer more aggressive off road rides or races I found there to be a very uncomfortable rubbing of my thumb on the grip shifter
tried changing my position
but
my default setting always took me back to this painful rub/abrassion
that was my 26″ race bike… not tired and old
with the build of my geared Karate Monkey I kept with the Rapid Fire below the bar thumb shifters
guess I am not just old… but also old school
