Hunters using mountain bikes

LA GRANDE (AP) — Bart Barlow credits his mountain bike with making it easier for him to take a pronghorn antelope earlier this year. Barlow recalled that he and a group of hunters were camped miles away from the hunting site.

“The other hunters had to get up at 2 a.m. to hike in (to the hunting site by sunrise). I got up at 5:30 and rode there in 45 minutes,” said Barlow.

Hunting on two wheels made sense for Barlow and others who have done it. Mountain bikes make less noise in a dry forest than someone walking, they allow one to cover more ground faster and they make it easier to pack out an animal.

I have a couple of friends that use mountain bikes to hunt. It is a lot quieter and faster to get from point A to point B. Now I don’t know how effective a mountain bike is after you bag a 10 pointer 5 miles from camp but its gotta be easier than pulling it by the antlers.

Dragging the 10 pointer(!) through the woods: That’s why God invented 4-wheelers :-) and pack animals.

I’ll give an Amen to that one. I’ve had to help drag a 200 pound deer what seemed like 10 miles while hunting in PA. It wasn’t fun.
