More urban riding

September 16th, 2005 by Tim Grahl

Hit the streets again last night. Troy from our LBS led the way and Mike, Carl and I followed behind as newbies.

Last week was my first time doing anything like this and I was pleasently surprised with how well I did. My balance was pretty good and I didn’t bust to hard at any point.

Last night Troy took us on a little harder stuff with some good steps and drops. What cracks me up is how Mike, Carl and I always approach new stuff in the same ways.

Troy

Carl is usually very tentative (I DID NOT say ball-less), so he ends up just kinda rolling off everything. However, gotta give credit where it’s due, he was starting to get the hang of things by the end of the ride and actually started jumping the bike off a few things.

Carl

Mike is pretty middle of the road, he’ll try a lot of stuff but stays careful to take small steps so he doesn’t kill himself in the process of becoming a better rider.

Then there’s me… I’m a big fan of just giving something a try and seeing what happens (and I have the scars to show it). So I’ll drop off the three foot ledge onto a sidewalk that’s right next to the road… my first time ever doing anything like this. I’ll try to clear the steps at the highest point. I mean seriously… we are only a few miles from the hospital anyway…

Also, about halfway through the ride I wheelied off this curb and my foot came loose. I figured I had just clipped out of the pedal, but I look down and my crank arm is dangling from my foot. Luckily I found the bolt and Troy had his tool along so we were able to throw it back on. Never had that happen before…

We all had a great time though. Time on bikes is always time well spent. Looking forward to next week’s ride.
