Forget LA, there’s a race going on
September 16th, 2005 by MikeMatthew Dougherty over at Velonews.com has some strong feelings about how much press Lance Armstrong’s comeback is getting.
Why are we talking about Lance? Isn’t there another grand tour going on right now, with some spectacular racing taking place? What about Heras and his gutsy racing, truly taking risks to take the lead? Not to be outdone, Menchov has fought hard and is not giving up. Oh, and there’s another thing. A young American in 10th place overall.
I have to say I agree with him, it would be cool if Lance comes back but until then shut the freak up about it.

The “Lance” story was pretty big. ( He now says there is no way he’s coming back.) He is going to be a big story for quite awhile. I seem to remember something about him winning SEVEN tours. In a ROW, no less! And the cancer, the recovery, yada, yada…..I’m sorry for you people who are sick of it, but really, what do you expect! The man is a legend, a phenomenon, and a miracle all wrapped into one! Yes, there is MORE to cycling than “just him”, but there is NO ONE CLOSE TO HIM! By the way, does anyone even remember Greg LeMond? Hmmm……
And the Vuelta! Puh-leaze! Until they get a field of riders anywhere close to the level of riders that the Giro gets, they will always be the step-sister of the Grand Tours. The Tour d’France is the greatest Grand Tour of all for a good reason. The best of the best show up to contest it. Look how people train the whole year to race in the Tour. They don’t do that for the Vuelta. Look who’s not there, and you’ll see the majority of the top ranked riders in the world on that list. Not at the Vuelta. Rant over! OUT!
Yeah but ya gotta admit that it’s kinda stupid to make a bit deal over his “come back” when he hasn’t really missed anything yet.
Take a year off and then return and call it a come back. Don’t say you are gonna retire, take three weeks off and then have a come back.
Let’s all say it together… “Publicity stunt!”
