Lever Enhanced Pedaling System

September 14th, 2005 by Mike

KT Cycles has made a lever based bicycle. They claim that it is much easier to “pedal” the lever bikes becuase the force put into pedaling is spread over a greater distance than just a crank arm. The single speed bike comes in at $1300 and the multi-speed bike is $2000.

Here is what they have to say about their bikes:

Experience the pedal power of the Lever Cycle. Human powered transportation engineered to decrease the work in pedaling by using the physical principles of the lever machine. These Mountain Bikes offer benefits unlike conventional bicycles.

The levers solve a problem that doesn’t exist. From the website: “Because this effort to move a transport load is spread over a much longer distance using a lever arm than the crank arm, a rider pedaling with levers will have lesser effort pedaling a bicycle.”

We already have a highly-efficient method of transferring power from the legs to the wheel — chain and multiple cogs to select from. Levers suck when it comes to converting leg motion to rotational force.
