Bike shop keeps it all in the family

This is a cool Q and A article with a local bike shop owner. The questions cover everything from “Why haven’t bikes gone the way of the big-box stores” to “where are most of your bikes made?”

For decades after it opened in 1914, Scott’s Cycle sold almost everything on wheels: lawnmowers, scooters and Harley-Davidson motorcycles.

Through the years, the downtown store became a specialty bike shop. It’s a place where you can ask for the basic model that Lance Armstrong rides, and they’ll have it in red, for about $3,500.

Scott’s Cycle is now Scott-free; the business was sold to Larry Lewis in the 1960s, who now owns it with his son. A true family business, both men’s wives also work at the shop.
