Bicycle journey out of hell

A South Jersey native pedaled a bicycle more than 80 miles in two days from New Orleans to Baton Rouge, La., to escape Hurricane Katrina’s devastation.

She paid $160 on the street for two bicycles, one for herself and another for her neighbor, Peter Bergeron. The two navigated flooded streets that sometimes forced them to walk their bikes through water up to their thighs, she said.
