High tech (and cheap) bike rentals

August 25th, 2005 by Tim Grahl

Engadget has a story about a high tech bike rental system being implemented in Lyon, France that will make it easy and (almost) free for people to rent and use bikes to get around town.

Basically you put your credit card on file so they can get ya if you run off with the bike, and you are given access to bikes all over the city. Grab one from a rack and ride across town and return it to the next rack. All the bikes and racks are on the same system so it keeps track of how long you had the bike and charges accordingly. Also, if you keep the bike for under a half hour, it’s free… so about 90% of the rentals end up being free.

What suck is that it’s doubtful this will make the jump across the pond to the US anytime soon, and we all know it definitely ain’t ever happenin here in central Virginia.
