When Being Cheap Doesn’t Pay Off

July 10th, 2005 by Guitar Ted

We all know that keeping our machines well lubed and maintained adds years of life to them.

Well, being the cheap-skate that I am, I wanted to find out a “Do It Yourself” or DIY way to make a wax lubricant like White Lightning.

So I read up on the forums at MTBR and found that a few guys were saying that I should take plain old paraffin wax and lighter fluid and combine them to make a substance just like White Lightning.

I headed out to the garage this afternoon with my wax in my left hand and my lighter fluid in my right. I get an old saline solution bottle and pop the wax in, pour the lighter fluid in and swish….swish and some more swishing…..

So I tried it on my chain and my shoulders started to slump and my head tilting down and my smile became a frown… It didn’t work.

Who knows, I might have had too much fluid and not enough wax. But it didn’t work.

Lesson learned? It’s ok to spend a few bucks on something that will keep your bike alive longer.

So I figure, I’ll reluctantly drop the $5 and go to my LBS and pick some White Lightning up later today.

Bummer…
