Mountain bikers undaunted by lion run-in
June 24th, 2005 by Tim GrahlMountain bikers Claire Brook and Kenneth Campbell were eating breakfast and planning Thursday’s ride along the Maah Daah Hey Trail, sounding at times as if they weren’t the ones menaced by a mountain lion on the trail only days earlier.
Despite Monday’s run-in with the cougar, they remained comfortable biking the popular trail.
“The chances of it happening a second time are even more remote than the first time,” Brook said during a telephone interview Thursday.
Brook was first to see the mountain lion as it came down the trail while she was trying to change a flat tire on her bike.
“I said, ‘Hum … is that what I think it is?’” she said.
“I heard her shriek something, and I looked up and kind of freaked, myself,” Campbell said.
“We started hollering and shaking the bikes at it, and it kept on coming to about 10 feet away,” Brook said.
When the cougar crouched in front of them, then laid down “looking peaceful,” they gathered up their bikes and gear and started moving away from the lion.
