The 24 Hours of Big Bear is a race with a new name but a long history. Started in 1991, the 24-hour racing format began with the first running of Laird Knight’s annual West Virginia race. The 24-Hours of Snowshoe was regarded as “the” hardcore East Coast mountain bike race, but racers soon grew tired of walking long stretches of the course. Attendance dropped while the overridden racecourse at Snowshoe Mountain Resort continued to erode, despite Knight’s best efforts to repair the trail.
