The Whistler Question

Chris Markle holds a prominent place in Whistler’s prodigious pantheon of pedal-powered perfection.

Those who aren’t plugged into the local mountain bike scene might be only slightly aware of an evolution that has been going on in the woods surrounding Whistler for about 10 years now.

A tight group of mountain bike aficionados has been cutting trails through the woods, the full extent of which you can only appreciate by taking your bike and riding the trails yourself. In the early days a lot of the trails were cut around the Emerald Estates subdivision, where you will find excellent singletrack with names such as Big Kahuna and No Girly Man.

North of Emerald, about 700 meters past the Cougar Mountain Forest Service Road, you’ll find another trail — and herein lies part of this week’s story.
