My Dad’s First Mountain Bike Ride

June 13th, 2005 by Tim Grahl

Last Friday I took off my day job cause my parents were coming into town. I’d been telling my dad I was gonna get him on a mountain bike so I finally took him out. The Blackwater Creek trail was in order cause it’s the best place to take beginners. I put him on our new Ibex Trophy since he is shorter then me and that is the smallest bike we got. I’d have pictures but my freakin camera has gone haywire on me… thank goodness for 90 day return policies.

Anyway, I was a little nervous taking him out cause he hasn’t been on a bike in 25 years and I didn’t want him falling and breaking a hip or something. Well dang it if he didn’t do better then any other newbie I have ever taken out… including me! He’s in pretty good shape cause of his job, but a lot of times that still doesn’t matter cause most people spend all their energy just trying to stay on the bike. Not my papa though, he looked like a natural just crusin’ down the trails. There was only one section of the trail that he had to put a foot down and I can’t say much cause I had to do the same in the same spot.

We rode for about an hour and a half and had a great time. I think at some points I was actually breathing harder then him. Go figure.

Good for Dad! Hey I’m an old geezer also, but we aren’t ready to be put out to pasture yet. How did he like the Ibex? At the moment I’m in the market for a new mtb but I’m torn between the Ibex-550($499) Ibex-770($769) and Giant-Iguana($600). Maybe Old Dad will kick out a few words for us on the upcoming review!
