Mountain Biking and Advertising
June 7th, 2005 by Tim GrahlIs it just me or am I seeing more and more commercials with mountain biking in them? In the past week I’ve seen four SUV commercials that all had mountain bikers in them. The one the bugged me the most was one last night where a guy was scootin’ down some singletrack pretty fast and he ends up sliding off the trail and falling. He stops but his bike bounds off this fifty foot cliff and lands in front of the oncoming SUV who’s “amazing maneuverability” allowed it to miss the bike.
I guess they are trying to side their SUV’s with adventure sports so people will feel like they can climb any durn mountain that get’s in their way on the morning commute. Of course, most people who drive an SUV never do anything close to what the advertising that convinced them to buy it portrayed them doing… but that’s a whole different issue.
I’m still not sure how I feel about this, but I’m leaning towards not liking it. Advertisers will spoil anything they can get their hands on in order to sell another piece of crap.

I’ve noticed it too. Even in Thailand were mountain bikes are almost none existent. However this is nothing new. I don’t suppose you’ve ever noticed that underclad women are featured in many ads or that the American flag is even stamped on my Discover card.
Lets’s try again (since I can’t find the edit):
Even in Thailand where mountain biker are nonexistent. However this is nothing new. I don’t suppose you’ve ever noticed that underclad women are featured in many ads or that the American flag is widely featured since 9/11? I could go on. But it probably doesn’t help the image of mountain biking with our detractors to have all the radical stuff being featured.
Right I def see all that stuff, I just hate when it is happening to cycling as well.
It’s too bad the macho SUV image might turn some people off, but it’s good for the sport. Any press is good press.
Who cares about the SUV! I felt sorry for the dude’s bike.
what about this — pennsylvania look mom, its… me!
