Bike Notes: Traffic safety

June 2nd, 2005 by Tim Grahl

Advocate-News.com:

Bicyclists must take it slow around horses. The equestrian should be approached calmly while announcing, On your left (or right), depending on which side you will pass. Dont spook the horse with sudden movement. Pass slowly and pull away gradually. The Ricochet Ridge Ranch horseback riders, which use Mackerricher State Park, ride in good formation but still need our consideration. On trails, the bicyclist must yield to equestrians. This can involve dismounting and standing to one side of the trail.

Bicyclists must yield to pedestrians but they can be passed as well. Go easy when passing, announcing which side you are passing on. Some pedestrians spook or get confused and veer into my path. Slowly works best.

On the road I pull over for RVs. Often there are several anxious drivers following them. They all pass me safely. On a bicycle it can be dangerous to insist on the right of way. Big bicyclists should watch out for little bicyclists, too.
