Ibex Trophy Bike Build
May 24th, 2005 by Tim GrahlWarning for those of you still running on dialup internet, there are a lot of pictures coming…
Last night Kenny Palmer from Bikes Unlimited stayed late at the shop with us to start building one of the Ibex frames up. Of course we were missing a few things (brake levers being one… I guess at some point we will need to stop) so we only got about halfway done.
We got the SRAM X.0 front and rear derailleurs hung and the Truvativ bottom bracket and Blaze crank installed. We also put on the Cane Creek headset and our circa ‘99 Manitou SX forks (hey, it’s all we got for now). The last thing we were able put on was the Titec stem and Hellbent handlebars.
Kenny is, in his own words, pretty anal when building a bike, which is good for us. Everything from taking plenty of time getting the BB threaded correctly to making sure the headset was turned just so as to have the logo pointing out.
Troy is hooking us up with some SRAM X.7 brake levers so we will be able to finish the build. We are hoping to have it done this week so we can hit the trails on it this weekend.
Thanks again to the guys at Bikes Unlimited for all the help.

Looks like you guys are going to have a fun on that bike!
Hey! No fair! That Huffy sat there the whole time, not getting any attention! What’s up with that? ( wink, wink!)
Seriously, that looks to be a fun bike! Hope your running SRAM shifters on that baby, ’cause that SRAM front derailluer doesn’t get along too well with Shimano shifters. Good Luck!
Ibex is known for paying for their reviews and cherry picked ratings. They are known to market to noobies who know little about bikes. I would recommend staying away from Ibex, and if anything test ride at your local bike shop first before buying anything online.
I don’t know where you get that they pay for their reviews. I saw a review of the Ibex Asta in either MBA or MTB Magazine and it got torn to pieces mostly because it didn’t come from a bike shop. I have an Ibex Ignition 2 and it rides great. When I blew out the rear shock from riding beyond the bike’s limits, they went out of their way to find me a new shock, even though they were running low. All the folks I have met with Ibex’s feel the same way as I do about the company. I’ve even gone to the warehouse and talked with one of the guys that runs the place, very nice folks.
Either way, great frame to build up. ya’ll enjoy it. That fork may be old, but I bet it still works well. Those old SX’s were great except for the whole bottoming out against the tire thing.
I recently bought an IBEX Asta Comp. They were out of 18 inch frames, thought that I could ride a 20 inch okay, I’m 5′11″. Got it promptly and in good condition, was a nice bike, but 20 inch was just too big for me. Cost an additional $20 for more bubble wrap, $90 for Fedex to send it back, plus another $35 to get a replacement 18 inch Asta Race (plus the difference in cost between the Comp and Race). Again, a nice bike, but getting the fit right cost an extra $125 plus the difference in price.
