Power peddling: Commuter cycling gains respect

Chances are, David Smucker rode his bike to work today.

Smucker, an advanced sales consultant with Nationwide Mutual Insurance Co., makes the ride downtown from his Grandview Heights home every day unless it’s raining or icy.

“If the roads are dry, it really doesn’t matter how cold it is,” Smucker said.

Denise Badgley, who commutes 6 miles to her job as controller at MedVet Associates Ltd. in Worthington, said she continued commuting by bike deep into December this year.

“As it gets colder each day, you get used to it,” Badgley said.

They’re not alone. With the weather turning warmer - and gas prices reaching record highs - there’s a growing subculture of Columbus workers who choose to get to work under their own power.
