My Newest Project

April 30th, 2005 by Tim Grahl

The newest thing I have started working on for the is a beginning mountain bike book. You can search all over the internet and find different little articles that address different aspects of helping the newbie get started in mountain biking or you can go buy a 200 page book that covers way to much. Well I am trying to compile a book that will cover everything including biking equipment, some basic techniques, trail ettiquite along with a glossary of terms so newbies won’t be lost in all the new lingo. And of course, this will all be from a blue collar perspective. I’m working on the equipment part of the book right now and walking the reader through the difference in equipment you need and equipment the salesman working on commision will say you need.

I’m also planning on taking all of my own pictures for the book and incorporating them so there will be illustrations available. My goal for this project is to make a definitive guide that newbies can get their hands on in order to get a full overview of what they need to know to get started in the sport.

Right now the plan is to put the final version into PDF format and make it available on here to download for free. That way you can pass it around to buddies that need some help getting started and people searching the internet will be able to get their hands on the info they need.

Here are the different overall sections in my outline so far:

  1. Equipment
  2. How to Buy a Bike
  3. Riding Basics
  4. Trail Etiquitte
  5. Glossary of Terms

I’ll keep you up to date on my progress.

Hey, check out Wm. Neely’s “The Mountain Bike Way of Knowledge”. It is very informative (it covers all your topics), with hilarious cartoons, and it can’t be but 70 pages (maybe $8). I have 2 copies: one for me, one to loan out. I learned a lot from it as a newbie (12 yrs. ago).
