Working Hard At It

April 26th, 2005 by Tim Grahl

Kiss my grits I’m freakin’ wasted. Against my better judgement, I joined the YMCA last week. Now gyms are definitely not my scene. Besides the fact that I could maintain a whole different blog making fun of the people that frequent gyms. The muscle heads that walk around in spandex and little tank tops, the old ladies that used to be hot but still like to show off the goods, the old guys that lean and talk and so on and so on. But I want to race in the DeRailer series come the end of the summer and I want to actually compete, so I figure I need something more then just riding during the week and being put out when it rains. So I’ve been hitting the stationary bikes a good bit working the legs then went to my first spinning class yesterday. It worked me pretty rough. An hour of constant riding and up and down and sit and stand and more resistance and yada yada… I hate that lady that was running the class.

On top of that I started doing some lifting so my upper body will be keeping up with my new found strength of the legs. Right… Anyway, my whole body is pretty tired, but I’m looking forward to getting on the trails and being able to ride farther, faster and more in control. That’s the plan anyway.

My riding buddies make fun of because I teach Power Cycling, a cheap Spinning knock-off. Hot girls in spandex obey me every order, what is not to like? Seriously, we had a guy I never seen show up for class yesterday. He was young, fit looking, wearing bike shorts and putting on his Pearl Izumi road shoes. I noticed his shaved legs. WTF? He stats out like, OK, this is easy. By the end of the class he looked ready to puke. Lets’ do some freakin’ JUMPS!

Yeah it was my first one so I started out with way to much resistance. I was about ready to throw in the towel ten mins in, I finished… but it wasnt a strong finish.

fixedgear, you are my hero if you teach any cycling class. While taking the class with Tim I had visions of hell, it was endless rows of stationary bikes.

We turn the light down and turn the music up. I make ‘em spin to the Ramones.

Nice! We are hangin with one teacher cause she is helping out Candace (my wife) with getting comfortable on the bike and such. She plays all kinds of stuff off her MP3 player.
