Like Ted said the left and right pedals are not threaded the same, just like the cups of your bottom bracket are not threaded the same. If the pedals have allen heads on the inside you can get an allen head socket and put it on a socket wrench and use a length of pipe over it as a breaker bar to help get you more leverage. I think it is easier to do with both wheels on the ground rather than in a stand.

You can use anti-seize when you put the pedal back on instead of grease to help the next time you take it off.

Hmmm...."left" pedal, you say? You do know that it is left hand threaded? Put the crank arm forward so that it is nearly parralel with the floor. Put your wrench on so that it lines up as close to the crankarm as possible. (The handle of the wrench should be right alongside of the crankarm. The end of the wrench handle at about the crank spindle.) It is preferable to have it so the wrench is slightly higher than the crankarm. Apply pressure downward, as if you are forcing the crankarm down by using the wrench, instead of the pedal. No luck? Try tapping the end of the wrench sharply with a heavy hammer. No luck? Go directly to the bike shop, do not pass go, do not collect $200.00! Ha! Hope that helps!

I would think that you can ruin the crank arms by adding heat to them?
