BENICIA - Nancy Lund had been a runner for decades, but she knew something was wrong when jogging became painful and she couldn’t walk fast enough to cross intersections before the light changed.

She was diagnosed with degenerative arthritis in her knees in June 2003. Lund, 64, had to quit running.

In a few months, Lund plans to bike about 600 miles from San Francisco to Los Angeles as part of a fund-raising event for the San Francisco AIDS Foundation.

What started as short jaunts to the Benicia State Recreation Area evolved into frequent rides of hundreds of miles or more.

“Most 20-year-olds couldn’t hold a pedal to Nancy,” said George Villarreal, who is in the Benicia Bike Club with Lund.
