Thrills, spills on mountain bike hills

Here is a good article for the older mountain bikers out there.

Monday, April 11: I am flying down the trail toward Lovers Point on a $2,000 mountain bike with a seat that wouldn’t accommodate Paris Hilton’s backsliding backside.

My companion is Jason Lucas, a local personal trainer who was to ride in last weekend’s Sea Otter Classic. Jason is not a professional rider. At about 6 feet 2 inches and 250 pounds, he looks like his legs are coming out of his arm holes. I’m pumping as fast as I can, trying to keep up with Jason, who is gliding along as if he were ice skating. The medial collateral meniscus in my left knee is screaming out my age to me, so I slow down.

“I’m doing it for the fun,” Jason tells me when I ask him why he’s training so hard to compete when he’s at the top end of the 30-39 age division, “I need to test myself, too, see what I can do.”
