OnGuard Locks

April 16th, 2005 by Guitar Ted

I recently started commuting to work and one of the main things a commuter would need is a decent lock set. I decided to purchase a coil lockset called the “Doberman 5027″ due to it’s thick cable and 5 key system.

I’ve been pretty happy with the lock since it has kept my bike from getting stolen from the bike racks at the high-rise that I work in. However, when I was going home last night, I slid the key in, turned, and then SNAP! The key broke! The cotton pickin’ key broke in the tumbler!

Here I was stuck at work and my bike is still locked at the rack. My wife was no where near home so I couldn’t call her to help me. Luckily my co-worker saw that I was having issues and I was able to borrow a flat head screwdriver and I shoved the broken key further in the tumbler, a little twist and then it was open.

Relieved that I now could go home, I put the lock in my back pack and started to pedal back home and I began thinking of ways how I can get this lock replaced under warranty. Luckily the company has a limited life time warranty that covers manufacturer’s defects. I would hope to think the key breaking falls under a “manufacturer’s defect.”

I will call Onguard Locks on Monday and let you guys know what will happen.
