A Costly Crash

April 11th, 2005 by Tim Grahl

I took the X-Caliber to Bikes Unlimited today on my lunch break cause the wheel is bent pretty good from last weeks fall. I figured it would take just a little truing and I would be back in the saddle again. Not so lucky. Not only are they questioning whether the wheel can be trued up, but I also bent my disc brake rotor and my headset is loose.

All in all this could add up to a pretty expensive fall. Man I hope they can get that wheel trued up straight. I ain’t got the cash for a new one right now.

Well, while it may not be “cheap”, you may want to consider “spoking over” to a new rim, and use the same spokes and hub. Rotors can be bent back into reasonably good shape with a large adjustable jaw wrench. ( Crescent wrench) Maybe it’s time to have a friendly shop mechanic show you how to do this stuff on your own. Might cost you the price of a rim and a sixer of brew. By the way, you don’t have to use a “disc specific” rim. Any decent quality eyeletted rim will do. May not match, but in the long run, you’ve got a ridable bike, and time to save for the real thing. Good luck!
