Save the Snakes!

April 8th, 2005 by Tim Grahl

A group in Albany, NY wants to shut down mountain bike trails to help preserve a dwindling rattlesnake population. Are these people for real? First off, how many of you have killed snakes on your bike? How many of you know someone who has? My answer to both is a big fat zero.

Even so, saving a poisionous snake is not on my top ten list of things to do. So let’s look at the choice… save a snake that kills people or let people continue a healthy exercise. Pretty simple to me. Scary that people actually listen to these whackos.

IMBA would cringe if they read this comment (if it isn’t in jest). I think that would be a negative way of fighting to maintain trail access. Mt. Bikers need to show that we’re sensitive to our environment and are committed to coexisting with our riding areas peacefully. Despite your personal distaste for rattlesnakes aside, they’re an important part of the eco-system. It would be important to show that bikes have no negative impact on the snakes (and additionally, any human or equine use of the area) and then offer to help in the conservation. That’s how you maintain access: burn no bridges.
