Earthworms are a Sign of Safety

Mountain bikers in Michigan wait for earthworms to make their way to the surface before they hit the trails. Once that happens they know they can ride the trails without damaging them. Good little article to remind us to stay off the trails until they are safe from major damage.

As long as a layer of frost lingers underneath biking trails, it not only keeps worms from straggling to the surface, it also leaves the trails in their most vulnerable state of the year. That’s why the Michigan Mountain Biking Association’s Potawatomi chapter president Bill Mayer said it is best to hold off an extra week or two until the ground has thawed and the worms are out.
