Training Days
March 30th, 2005 by Guitar TedIn the past few weeks I’ve been training myself to prepare for a XC Race here in So.Cal. I read from the Training FORUM of MTBR, that the best way to build your climbing skills and strength is to ride on the middle ring (32), and never going down to your granny gear(22) during any climbs.
So I’ve tried this technique out and so far so good. I am finding my ability to climb is greatly improving. Not only does the 32 allow you to build some power, but it also allows you to climb faster than other riders using the granny gear. Besides, you can actually see your legs get bigger within a few weeks! My legs now are more cut then ever before.
Now if you guys have other tips on training, please leave a comment, that way everyone can learn from your experiences.

If I had to to do it all over again, I’d have gotten a coach immediately. http://www.bicyclecoach.com is a good resource as are locals in your area. Expensive option but it would have help get me a good knowledge base upfront and not spend years making mistakes. If this is not an option then get at least 3-4 training books. Training philosophies can be debated forever, but you can see what things are similar between programs, and try out different things and draw your own conclusions. Books I’ve like are Performance Cycling by Dave Morris, Single Track Mind by Paul Skilbeck, Mountain Bike like a Champion-Ned Overend, Bicycle Road Racing - Eddie B. Joe Friel’s books.etc.
Other things I wish I knew early on
-be patient, it takes time
-set the right goals. Not based on winning or placing, but more quantifiable and controlable
good luck
Thanks for responding. I will definitely look into reading some of those books.
