Minimize your risk of getting hurt on the trail

March 4th, 2005 by Mike

I found something that Tim (the wreck) needs to read…

Active.com

We’ve seen the magazine photos and advertisements: mountain bikers hammering through rough terrain, catching air, slicing around corners in clouds of dust, bunny-hopping rocks. We’ve grimaced at the photos of face-plants, endos, and crash landings.

Crash

The subconscious message is easy to translate: Mountain bikes possess the invincibility of a SUV. The pictures never show mountain bikers being taken away to an emergency room. They don’t show fractures, massive skin rash, or bones being casted. They don’t portray anything that hints at real pain and suffering.

No national statistics on mountain bike injuries are available. We intuitively know that their severity doesn’t compare to road riding. Free of cars and other street perils, we mountain bikers are comparatively safe. And the bikes are incredible. These days we even have suspension to insulate us from the bumps of the trail.

There’s more.

    oh…. we know….
but we don’t like to talk about it

    actually… I have always know
that may be part of my “land dweller” persona
even on a snowboard I never went too far out of the pipe
    and
    never went too big
even with huge powder I was never much for the HUGE AIRS
somehow I have always felt more comfortable close to the ground rather than slamming on the ground

    oh… I crash
    oh… I have crashed
    oh… I will crash again

but don’t be shocked to see me dab from time to time
or even do a massive speed check
    or even chicken out…
