Pay Me To Ride

March 2nd, 2005 by Tim Grahl

H.R. 807. You need to burn that into your memory and your email-typin’ fingers. H.R. 807… H.R. 807… H.R. 807…

Why? Because that is the bill that has been introduced to the House of Representatives “to amend the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 to extend the transportation fringe benefit to bicycle commuters.” What does that mean to you and me in English? It means, if passed, it will allow your employer to offer you a benefit of $100 every month that you ride your bike to work. It’s a win-win because your employer gets a great tax right off and you get cold hard cash for doing what you love to do anyway. It’s supposed to help with traffic congestion, smog, blah blah blah. All I hear is that I get money for riding my bike. That’s an extra twelve hundred bones a year.

Anyway, make sure to check out the official Congress site with the bill, then read more about it at the League of American Bicyclists website and EMAIL YOUR REPRESENTATIVE IN D.C.!

We have a program at my work. If you ride your bike or walk to work at least 3 days a week for 4 weeks, they pay your $60! Not bad, but I wished we could bring our bikes to our cubby holes. I don’t trust the parking lot.

Awesome! I will definitely look into this. I commute by bicycle to work and back, so this is right up my alley. Thanks!
