Tax on Bikes for Cali

February 28th, 2005 by Tim Grahl

Freakin’ typical of the government types. In California there is going to be a $7 tax put on every new bike sold. This is to help pay for disposal of abandoned bikes. They also instituted a $3 payment to anyone returning a bike to a recycle place. Here are some excerpts:

Buyers would pay an extra $7 for bicycles next year under proposed legislation to encourage recycling and reuse of old two-wheelers.

Recycling centers would pay $3 apiece in coming years for unwanted bikes that were bought new after the bill took effect.

They say the bill would hurt bicycle sales and burden dealers with paperwork, and is not needed because a strong secondary market already exists for metal frames — unlike cans and bottles, they’re not typically dumped as litter along state roadways.

Karnette said her bill not only would help landfills, it would teach children a valuable environmental lesson at modest cost.

What a load of bull. A tax is a tax is a tax, and charging someone extra to use a safer, more environmentally sound way of transportation is stupid. You can go here to read the entire article.

    Figures…I hate politicians…
That’s the dubmest thing I’ve ever heard. It would make more sense of California focused more on an cheaper and more effective means of Public Transportation. I know of som folks that use the train to commute to work but the cost of it woul be the sames driving. The only benefit is not having to drive in traffic.

If it was up to me, I would put a tax on SUV’s. The bigger the SUV the greater the tax. Then give people tax breaks for the ones that drive economical cars such as 4 bangers and hybrids.
    Dumb politicians….

I think the revenue generated from a tax on bicycles should benefit those riding said bicycles. Such as bike lanes and trails. The bicycles that are filling landfills are the Big Box bikes that are built to last 60 hours of riding if that. The bikes you find at a LBS will probably have multiple owners in it’s life, and last many years longer than the Walmart bikes.

Amen, Amen! Both comments are great! ( excepting that not EVERY politician is a dolt!) This is so far bass ackward that it’s funny! Well, maybe not “funny”, because somebody believes in this bill! Really, what ought to happen is to TAX the AUTOS, and give the $$$$ directly to bike and pedestrian issues, with a few bones to the mass transit systems. Is this how people in Cali come up with money to spend on their bankrupt government services? What idiots!!!

Even starting up one of the early bikes was a feat. Riders lubricated the engine with a manual pump with devastating results for clothing and also damaging the uncovered chain drive.
