My First Race

February 16th, 2005 by Tim Grahl

Everyone in the Central VA area, don’t forget about the Mountain Cross race that Bikes Unlimited is putting on this Sunday at 2pm in Bedford. Racing, food and fun… it doesn’t get better than that. If you have questions or need directions, feel free to email me.

This will be my first race and I’ll be ridin’ high on the Gary Fisher X-Caliber complete with 29 inch wheels. My butt is gonna be draggin’ since I have been doing to much of this and that and not enough riding. I can’t wait for it to warm up and stay light longer. Anyway, I hope it won’t be to embarrassing since it looks like I will be the only one from the Blue Collar crew there.

Anybody have some tips for a race newbie?

One crucial tip! Make sure you do an agressive warm up before your race. You’ve got tons of adrenaline in your body before the race and you need to use some of it up. If you don’t and you go balls out off the starting line, you will bonk in a few miles. Try to ride a few miles for a bit, if you have a trainer, set it up and pedal for at least 20 mins. Good Luck!

Just go off the start screaming like a crazed maniac. That will scare people enough to clear a wide open path for ya. Good luck!

My tip….eat a low fiber pre-race meal at least 3 hours before your start. That way your tummy will be happy. You need the blood in your legs, not in your gut digesting your food.

Haha right! I can see it now… I will pull ahead then pass out on the first lap.

Pulling ahead and passing out at least is more dignified than say, pulling ahead and throwing up! Ditto on the pre-race meal!

My tip is to go as fast as you can.

    Amphetamines help me.
