Mountain Bike Mag’s Suggestion

January 25th, 2005 by Tim Grahl

I checked out Mountain Bike Magazine’s website today and they were featuring on the front page the Cannondale Gemini 3000. The caption stated “A lot of our readers think this bike might be their horoscope.” Who are these readers that have this kind of money floating around? While it is obviously a nice bike, the retail price is bumping against four grand. Can they be more out of touch with the average rider? That rounds out close to 15% of my yearly income… before Uncle Sam gets his nickel. I don’t know about you, but after the bills are paid, I dont have that kind of money left over. Why can’t they pick something a little more averaged price that would actually have meaning to most people?

Right on! $40 is the most I’ve paid for a bike, and it was a Cruiser! My moutain bikes were either gifts from people who bought up or I bought the frame for less than $35 and built them myself. If I did have the money to buy a new bike, it would probably be a Monocog. You guys should review one.

    Keep up the good work.

I read about a couple years ago from a survey, that the average Mtn Biker’s yearly income…remember this was an average, was around, $75k per year. Don’t know about you, but I fall in the category of “below average”…lol
Then the average price paid for a bike was around $1500.
I can’t recall which issue of Bike Magazine had the survey.

Haha… then me, and all my buddies, are WAY below average.

Count me in the “way below average club” too! I work at a bike shop- need I say more?

I figured about $300 was good enough to buy a good Schwinn, but now Wal-Mart is selling Schwinns MTB’s for around $150. The only cheap part I see on the Bike is the Crank Bearing are a little on the small side diameter wise.

I hate Twist-Shifts so I added Index Shimano triggers and the standard tool kit and its sending me everywhere. I probably could have done better used on the ebay local thing and built it from there.

The only other thing I am willing to invest good dollars in is a set of Armadillo Reflect Tires.
I hope they are as good as advertised?

I also still have my 1970 Schwinn Continental Road machine which I bought in 1970 with lawn mowing money! Bike Never Die, they just keep on rolling along.
