I’m Scared of Cold Weather
January 22nd, 2005 by CarlThere’s snow on the ground. Not that much, but enough.
Tim asked me to ride with him this morning at 8 AM, and as usual, I called at 8:07 to tell him I wasn’t coming.
Whats the point?
I’m a cold weather wuss. For some reason its impossible for me to talk myself out of my bed when its 20 degrees outside. I mean, I love riding… but seriously… its so freaking cold!
What I really need is some good, warm knickers. I made fun of Tim a million times when he would wear them in warmer weather but now here I sit wishing I had some. There’s no way my padded spandex shorts will suffice on days like today.
What do you all wear on those sub-40 mornings? How many layers do you use, and what kind? I could use all the advice I can get!

Living in Iowa, we have to be ready for just about any conditions. For the colder days (ie: 32 degrees and colder) here is my list.
My Hands: Lobster style gloves (I use CRAFT)
My Feet: Defeet Woolie Boolies, cycling shoes, Windproof/water proof booties
My Head: Balaclava and a helmet
My Eyes: Tifosi Optics
Upper Body: Craft Base Layer, Thermal style jersey with turtle neck like feature, Windproof Jacket
Lower body: Leg warmers, and NEMA Stone shorts.
Lower Body when really cold: Nike Thermal windfront bib tights.
I have worn these items in 32 degree weather and -15 degree weather. Hope this helps.
What Jeff said. But remember, it’s all about sweat management! Sweat too much in cold weather, and sooner or later you’ll be freezing. As a rule of thumb, dress so that you are slightly cold to chilly when you start out. After about 10-20 minutes of consistent riding, you should be pretty comfy. Just don’t start out so warm, that you get to sweating right away. Then your doomed!
Suck it up! What are you, a woman??
When is it bad weather why do people get insane???
I have noticed , that anytime it rains, or there is a freeze, the public panics, rushes out to the stores and buy up all the
bottled water, batteries, flash lights, firelogs, and canned food. Why is this. You would think people that have been through
this kinda weather before would understand that it will not last more than a day or two at the most.
Another thing I have noticed is when it rains that all the dumb people again get on the roads and cause wrecks and everything
else.
What is wrong with the people? I would really like to know.
