Cop to bike from ‘Aa to Bee’
January 5th, 2005 by MikeOSLO, Norway (AP) - British policeman Paul Perry plans to ride his bicycle from “A” to “B,” he said Tuesday, adding that this jaunt will carry him from Norway to Nebraska.
Perry’s journey, expected to kick off Friday, would take him from the fishing village of Aa, some 1,500 kilometres north of the capital, Oslo.
From Aa, he plans to ride 10,000 kilometres through Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium and to France, before taking a ferry to Britain and riding across the country to take a ship to New York. He’ll then cycle north into Canada, making his way to Ottawa before pedalling to Toronto and then to Windsor before dipping back into the United States at Detroit.
If he’s successful, Perry said he’ll end his trip in Bee, Nebraska.
Perry plans to be on the road - and at sea - for four months, and he’s riding a 24-speed tandem bike.
He said he opted for the tandem in case someone wants to help him pedal.
The trip will be broken down into daily legs of 80 to 90 kilometres. The only place where he’ll have a real roof over his head is the trans-Atlantic crossing.
“I have budgeted for the trip, but I want to keep the cost low,” he said, adding he plans to spend most nights camping.
He said the trip is part of his effort to raise money for the British Red Cross.
